How old do I have to be to…?

Leaving children on their own

There is no set legal minimum age. However if a child suffers harm or is likely to suffer home this would be child neglect and the court could authorise an Emergency Protection Order. The NSPCC suggests that children under 13 should not be left for more than brief periods.

Babysit

There is no minimum age for babysitting but those with parental responsibility for the child being looked after must ensure that the babysitter is capable. The NSPCC recommends a minimum age of 16.

Contraception

There is no minimum age for being prescribed contraception. A doctor does not have to inform parents unless they believe the child may be being abused.

Alcohol

Children as young as five may drink at home, however if they are harmed the parent or carer can be charged with a criminal offence. A child of 16 can drink beer, wine or cider in a pub or hotel with a meal if they are accompanied by someone over 18.

Criminal liability

The age of criminal liability is 10. Children under 10 can be placed under supervision or care of the local authority if they are likely to suffer harm and/or are beyond parental control.

Marry

A child can marry at 16 with the consent of all adults with parental responsibility.

Make a will

You must be 18 to make a will. However special arrangements can be made for those under 18 serving in the armed forces.

Adoption

You must be over 21 to adopt a child. The child being adopted must be under 18.
